JOHNSTOWN -- Leaders of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests reacted to joint press conference held by the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese and Department of Justice about abuse prevention plans.

The Survivors Network, otherwise known as SNAP, protested outside the Diocese Administration Center last week. Protesters said they felt the Diocese had not implemented enough change in the year that passed after the grand jury report was released.

The 147-page reported outlined abuse accusations made against 50 priests since the 1960s.

The current Bishop Mark Bartchak and acting U.S. Attorney Soo C. Song held a press conference Monday outlining plans to prevent future abuse within the Diocese.

“One case of sexual abuse is too many,” Bartchak said. “We need to repent in that and make sure it doesn't happen again."

SNAP's Midwest Associate Director Judy Jones said the plans outlined in the conference were only a "small step forward."

"We are still only seeing words and promises. We are not seeing any actions that make children safer today than they were a year ago," she said.

Thomas Venditti is a Pennsylvania leader of SNAP, and also participated in the protest.

He said he was pleased with what he saw Monday, but said he thinks whistleblowers need more protection.

The plans include a new reporting protocol that will require the Diocese to report abuse allegations to law enforcement officers within 12 hours.

"I don't see any acknowledgement or recognition of people who put their jobs on the line basically to protect children," Venditti said.

Venditti said the plans were a great start, but still need work.

“We ask that people judge the success of this plan by its actions and not by the words. Actions protect kids not words," Jones said.
