Lincoln Cathedral

Police have urged potential victims and witnesses of sexual abuse at a Lincoln school to come forward.

The force is trying to track down 127 former pupils who attended the Cathedral School in the city between 1963 and 1970 as it investigates alleged historic sexual abuse.

The appeal follows the arrest of 81-year-old Roy Griffiths from Dorset, who has been charged with eight sexual offences.

He faces six counts of indecent assault on a boy under the age of 14 and two counts of inciting a boy under the age of 14 to commit an act of gross indecency.

It was part of Operation Redstone, an ongoing enquiry into allegations of abuse dating back to 1958 following a review of past safeguarding cases by the Diocese of Lincoln.

Detective Superintendent Rick Hatton told the BBC: "It is often difficult for them; there's a whole range of emotions that they go through so I fully understand the reasons they have to not come forward.

"By my plea to them is come forward and tell us your experiences and we can go through them together and try to develop schemes that are useful to your needs."

A spokesperson for Lincoln Cathedral said: "The cathedral has throughout Operation Redstone worked proactively in partnership with Lincolnshire Police and stands ready to offer support to anyone who contacts them about issues of harm and abuse.

"The cathedral can promise that they will listen attentively to their experiences, walk alongside them in seeking justice and ensure that their voices are heard."

If you would like to talk to the inquiry team please contact Lincolnshire Police on 101 quoting incident 208 of the April 26 or ask for Operation Redstone during working hours.
