Archbishop Michael Jude Byrnes said Wednesday the Vatican has not yet issued a decision on the canonical trial of Archbishop Anthony S. Apuron.

Apuron faces multiple civil lawsuits over the alleged rape and sexual abuse of altar boys in the 1970s.

Byrnes said he will hold a news conference, as soon as Thursday, to provide an update on the Vatican's canonical trial process.

As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Archdiocese of Agana hadn't provided further details about the news briefing.

Apuron's ongoing canonical trial came up during he question-and-answer portion of Byrnes' monthly "Updating the Faithful" series on Wednesday.

"That's another story," Byrnes said when asked about Apuron's canonical trial.

Apuron is one of 14 Guam clergy who allegedly raped and/or sexually abused minors, based on 77 clergy sex abuse lawsuits filed against the Archdiocese of Agana. Three other childhood sexual abuse cases against the archdiocese don't involve clergy.

Pope Francis suspended Apuron on June 6, 2016, after former altar boys came forward starting in May 2016 to accuse Apuron of rape and sexual abuse when he was parish priest in Agat. Apuron has denied the allegations.

Apuron left Guam in late May 2016. The last time he addressed Catholics on Guam was via a video message purportedly taken at the Vatican in early June 2016.

A scheduling conference will be held July 6, in the U.S. District Court of Guam on six clergy sex abuse lawsuits, four of which are against Apuron.
