Rev. Jonathan Wehrle appears in Judge Donald Allen Jr.'s courtroom for a preliminary hearing Friday, July 7, 2017. He is accused of embezzling millions from St. Martha Parish in Okemos.

A Michigan State University alumnus turned YouTube star will serve as grand marshal for the university’s 2017 homecoming.

Tyler Oakley, who graduated from MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 2011, is a video creator on YouTube with nearly 8 million subscribers.

The Okemos native also was among YouTubers who consulted President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, helping them to use digital platforms to connect with younger generations. He has been named one of Time Magazine’s “30 most influential people on the internet” as well as being on the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Events include showing Spartan spirit by swapping a visible light bulb with a green bulb, Alumni Grand Awards Gala, MSU Homecoming Parade, Green and White Brunch, tailgating events and the Homecoming Football Game vs. the Indiana Hoosiers on Oct. 21.
