Some teachers in Greater Sudbury are facing disciplinary hearings over allegations of misconduct. The teachers – two from the English Catholic school board and one from Rainbow District – face hearings for a range of issues, from sexual abuse of a student to criminal charges related to an incident outside the classroom.

Some teachers in Greater Sudbury are facing disciplinary hearings over allegations of misconduct.

The teachers – two from the English Catholic school board and one from Rainbow District – face hearings for a range of issues, from sexual abuse of a student to criminal charges related to an incident outside the classroom.

In the first case, a male teacher with the Catholic board was accused of rubbing a female student's leg on two different occasions over two school years.

As a result, he's facing allegations of student sexual abuse, as well as physical and emotional abuse, of failing to live up to professional standards and of engaging in conduct unbecoming to someone in the profession.

In the second case, another Catholic board teacher was found guilty of professional misconduct for a variety of issues, such as swearing at students, losing his temper and tearing cords out of the wall, hugging male and female students, hitting one male student with a yardstick and telling a female student to wear something sexy for a performance.

He also told a female student who lived far away that she could stay over at his house if it was allowed. 

As a result of those incidents, he was required to attend and complete some training courses, which he failed to do and now faces another disciplinary hearing.

In the third case, a male teacher with the Rainbow Board was convicted of assaulting someone – not a student -- with a metal pipe. He also failed to follow court orders to stay away from a specific person and to abstain from alcohol or drugs. He was sent to jail for 45 days as a result.

He again failed to abide by court orders and attempted to contact the person again, and was given another 15 days in jail.

According to the allegations, he claimed sick time while he was in jail, and attended court hearings when he was supposed to be working. 

He's also accused of directing his criminal lawyer to lie to the school board to cover his absences.
