Some parents of students attending Bishop Baumgartner Memorial Catholic School were shocked to learn that a physical education teacher was arrested yesterday for alleged criminal sexual conduct.

Peregrine Corpuz San Nicolas, 52, was arrested by police after being accused of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and child abuse.

The school's website lists San Nicolas as a physical education teacher for fifth- to eighth-grade students, and the school's sports director.

The Archdiocese of Agana, which has administrative authority over the school, issued a statement confirming that a parent of a female student met with Bishop Baumgartner school administrators yesterday morning and reported the minor was allegedly inappropriately touched by the teacher.

The school administration reported the incident to Child Protective Services and police.

A criminal complaint was filed with the Guam Police Department, which conducted interviews.

San Nicolas was arrested and jailed.

‘I'm just shocked’

News spread of the arrest as parents were picking up their children after school yesterday.

"I'm just shocked. He was both of my children's teacher," said Melissa Cruz, parent of a current seventh-grade daughter. "Sometimes my daughter will tell me he (San Nicolas) would give her a hard time in class. It all just makes me wonder now his intention and mindset."

"I'll be having a talk with my children tonight. I hope they'd confide in me if anything like that happened to them."

Two parents, who have children attending the school, and who wanted to remain anonymous, said they were shocked to learn of the arrest, not by school officials but from the media.

They said San Nicolas seemed like a good man and teacher who "the kids liked and trusted."

The school administration immediately reported the alleged incident to authorities, according to the archdiocese.

Archdiocese: Committed to children's safety

The archdiocese noted that police interviewed the victim, other students and the accused teacher.

"We take all allegations of sexual abuse very seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety of all children entrusted to our care," according to the archdiocese.

Archdiocese Director of Communications Tony Diaz did not know how long the teacher had worked at Bishop. He said school administrators met with faculty yesterday afternoon.

Diaz confirmed that police plan to interview other students and that parents would be notified.
