EDINBURG – John Feit will be transferred to a state-run prison early next week.

Hidalgo County Sheriff authorities confirmed deputies and medical staffers will transport the former priest to the Byrd Unit in Huntsville in the coming days.

Feit was convicted earlier this month for the murder of Irene Garza. He was sentenced to life in prison.

He will now leave the Rio Grande Valley after nearly two years in the Hidalgo County Jail.

The former priest was notified about the impending transfer.

Authorities are not releasing the exact day of transfer due to security concerns.

“I keep telling people I’m just relieved, you know. We are relieved that justice has been served,” Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez said. “And yes, it was an old or the oldest cold case ever tried in the nation, but no different than any other case we’ve dealt with before or presented in a courtroom.”

Feit refused to answer any questions about Irene Garza after his sentencing last Friday. This week the former priest also declined CHANNEL 5 NEWS’ request to interview him.

Rodriguez said it doesn’t surprise him that he won’t say anything about the case. “Maybe his attorneys told him not to comment, but that’s his decision.”

We are waiting to hear back from Feit’s court-appointed attorney because, according to his paperwork, he owes the county $269 in court costs.
