A teacher at Evangelical Christian School is facing charges for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with one of her students.

A Lee County Sheriff's Office release said detectives on Wednesday began investigating the alleged sexual relationship between Suzanne Lea Owen, 35, a high school teacher, and one of her male students.

Deputies responded to ECS at 8237 Beacon Blvd. in Fort Myers and met with Owen, of North Fort Myers.

Investigators found that she had had one sexual encounter with the male student one week prior, where the two decided to meet off-campus.

The sheriff's office release said detectives also found that Owen had been communicating with the student through personal text messages several weeks prior to the incident.

Owen was charged with custodial sexual battery, a first-degree felony. She remains in the Lee County Jail with no bond or arraignment date set.

Headmaster John Hunte sent a statement to parents of students on Wednesday evening. The letter said that the school found out late Wednesday afternoon about the incident and the teacher had been fired.

"We are deeply saddened and express sincere sympathy to any and all victims of sexual assault," the statement said. "We have and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement during this investigation. ECS was not aware of the report of the incident until late today. I wanted you to be aware of this as I anticipate it will be reported by the news media.

"Please be in prayer for all of the families involved."
