Adrian Cristobal

Archbishop Michael Byrnes has imposed sanctions on Father Adrian Cristobal Saturday after the former chancellor's failure to report to the archdiocese by Friday.

"This action is taken as a result of the diocesan priest’s failure to obey repeated directives to return to Guam, following allegations of sexual abuse filed against him last April and May," the Archdiocese of Agana announced.

The sanctions further restrict Cristobal's abilities to act as a priest in public, which includes the wearing of clerical garb, the archdiocese stated.

Previously, Byrnes had limited the faculties of Father Adrian as a priest as part of precautionary measures related to the first allegation, effective April 11. The earlier restriction stated that he could not celebrate Mass publicly or hear confession while the case is being reviewed.

Multiple claims of sexual abuse

He was accused of sexually molesting and abusing three altar boys of the San Vicente/San Roke Catholic Church in Barrigada, one of whom said the abuse had lasted 15 years.

Each of the cases is undergoing the archdiocese's investigation and review process in accordance with its sexual abuse policy.
