The ‘Loud Fence’.

BRIGHT, colourful ribbons fluttering along a purpose-built Torquay church fence signify a rainbow of hope for survivors of historical sexual abuse.

Survivors of institutional abuse have welcomed the installation of a “Loud Fence” out the front of Saint Therese Catholic Church.

While there are no allegations of abuse at the new church, community members wanted a purpose-built place to acknowledge survivors of sexual abuse and ensure the horrors of the past are never forgotten.

Jan Juc’s Shae Valentine was one of a small group of community members who called for a permanent Loud Fence outside the church.

“The Loud Fence can be seen, in front of the church and the ribbons blow freely in the breeze,” Ms Valentine said.

“They are a symbol that nothing will be tucked away, kept small, silent and hidden away ever again,” Ms Valentine said.

Ms Valentine and survivors tied ribbons out the front of the church on Sunday.

Father Lin Tranh said the fence was an important acknowledgment of historical abuse and served as a symbol of support for affected community members.
