  Molestation Charges against a Priest

United Press International
May 12, 1987

An assistant district attorney in Santa Fe says his office might drop some of the more than 160 sexual molestation charges against a priest.

Steve Henry said he is looking at statements from the alleged victims and witnesses and could voluntarily withdraw some of the charges before the case against Father Dennis Fountain goes to court this summer.

Attorneys for Fountain, who was dean of students at St. Catherine's Indian School before the accusations, contend the district attorney failed to present evidence to the indicting grand jury of Fountain's innocence.

They say adult witnesses testified in detail but the alleged victims, who have denied any wrongdoing took place, were not allowed to testify.

District Judge Bruce Kaufman said last week he was concerned with police interviews with the boys but decided against dismissing any charges.
