June 1, 1988

A friar was suspended from his teaching duties at a Catholic elementary school after being charged Tuesday with indecent contact with a student.

Scott County authorities said Daniel Embrich, 38, was accused of touching the inner thigh of a girl at Holy Family School during the 1985-86 school year. Embrich, a Franciscan brother who resides at the Brothers of Christ the King Monastery in Bettendorf, pleaded innocent during an initial court appearance Tuesday and was released under a pre-trial release program.

A complaint filed in Scott County District Court alleges on several occasions during the 1985-86 school year, Embrich placed a child on his lap during recesses and toughed the child's on the leg under the underwear "for the purpose of arousing and satisfying the sexual dessire of the defendant."

Authorities said they began investigating Embrich when they receive several complaints from children at the school. Police said they have interviewed at least seven children since April 27.

Monsignor Robert Schmidt, superintendent of schools for the Davenport Diocese, said Embrich was suspended from his teaching duties Tuesday, pending further action on his status by the Holy Family School Board.
