Woman Awarded $ 10,000 in Sex Assault by Priest

ST. PAUL, Minn. - A jury in St. Paul, Minn., has awarded $ 10,000 in damages to a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted by a Catholic priest. But the woman will receive only $ 6,666 of the award because jurors decided she and the archdiocese had been negligent in contributing to the incident. She had asked almost $ 300,000 in damages in the suit brought against the priest, the Rev. Michael Kolar, a former director of the St. Paul Catholic Youth Center, and the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis, which operated the center. The jury found Monday that Kolar and the archdiocese were each a third negligent in the case. The verdict involves one of three lawsuits filed against Kolar. All three women who brought the suits allege that Kolar abused his power as a priest and counselor by having sexual contact with them. Theodore Collins, attorney for Kolar, said his client is in the process of being released from his priestly vows and admits he is a sex addict.
