  Priest Sentenced for Molestation

July 3, 1993

A retired Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing boys in northern Kentucky was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison.

Campbell County Circuit Judge William Wehr ordered Earl Bierman to spend two to four of those years in a treatment program for sex offenders.

Bierman, 61, could be eligible for parole in four years, if he successfully completes the treatment.

Rick Thomas, who accused Bierman of abusing him when he was a boy, said he thought the sentence was fair.

"I hope other victims have the courage to get on with their lives, as I am doing," said Thomas, now a lawyer who was in court for the sentencing.

Bierman pleaded guilty May 5 to charges of sodomy and committing indecent or immoral practices involving several boys between 1965 and 1980. He worked for more than 30 years in northern Kentucky as a nursing home chaplain, associate pastor and teacher. He retired in 1991.
