Priest Gets 10 Years for Sexual Assault

Wisconsin State Journal
July 20, 1993

A 60-year-old Roman Catholic priest convicted of sexually assaulting a teen-age boy was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday, the maximum punishment for second-degree sexual assault.

The Rev. William Effinger, former pastor of Holy Name Catholic Church, was convicted of having sexual contact with a 14-year-old town of Sheboygan boy in the basement of the youth's home.

"There is a part of (Effinger) that goes beyond the immoral and amoral, goes to the dark side of humanity," said Circuit Judge Gary Langhoff.

Effinger, a clergyman for 32 years, is on leave from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Effinger and the archdiocese have been named in several lawsuits that allege church officials knew Effinger was an alcoholic and was attracted to boys.
