  Pastor Charged in Touch

Associated Press, carried in New York Times
July 22, 1993

The pastor of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church here was charged today with touching an 18-year-old man's genitals after a party in the rectory. Msgr. Robert Morel, 49, was charged with criminal sexual contact and faces 18 months in prison if convicted, said Bergen County Prosecutor John J. Fahy. The cleric, who had been celebrating his promotion to monsignor Tuesday night, is accused of touching the man under his clothes about 1 A.M. Wednesday, Mr. Fahy said. He stopped after the man objected, Mr. Fahy said. No one else was present. A call to the parish rectory for comment was not immediately returned Wednesday night. A priest since 1969, Monsignor Morel has been pastor at St. Peter's since November 1988.
