Church Settles with 9 for Abuse by Priest

Chicago Tribune
December 1, 1993

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has reached out-of-court settlements with seven men and two women who allege they were molested by a priest when they were minors, according to their lawyer. Robert Elliott said the cases involve Rev. William Effinger, with the allegations spanning 20 years from the priest's first parish assignment to his last. Elliott refused to say how much money was agreed upon in the settlements. Effinger, 60, was sentenced in July to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in 1988 at his last parish, Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheboygan. Archbishop Rembert Weakland has publicly apologized for Effinger and said the church wants to help his victims.
