  Priest Accused of Abuses

Washington Post
July 24, 1995

Ten men have accused a former Catholic priest of molesting them, according to the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The men, whose names were not released by the church, came forward last week, saying the Rev. Robert Hopkins, 75, sexually abused them during his 47-year tenure at parishes in Central and Western Maryland. Parishioners in the Baltimore area and in Allegany County received inserts in church bulletins last week notifying them of the allegations.

"We fear there may be victims in all of the parishes where he was assigned," church spokesman Bill Blaul said. He declined to release further details.

Hopkins has been stripped of his priestly duties and is being treated at an undisclosed location.

Blaul said the abuse is believed to have occurred between 1955 and 1980. Hopkins retired from St. Patrick's in Cumberland last month.

No criminal charges have been filed. Church officials have turned the issue over to prosecutors in Baltimore and in Allegany and Baltimore counties.
