  Mass Set for Priest in Crowley

CROWLEY - A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at St. Michael Catholic Church for the Rev. Charles J. Zaunbrecher.

Zaunbrecher, 65, died Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette after a lengthy illness.

His death was announced by the Diocese of Lafayette through a press release.

Msgr. H.A. Larroque, vicar general of the diocese, will conduct the Mass.

Interment will be at the cemetery in Roberts Cove, a German settlement in Acadia Parish where Zaunbrecher was born.

Zaunbrecher is survived by three brothers, Vincent, Billy, and Steve Zaunbrecher, all of Roberts Cove, one sister, Dolores Habetz of Roberts Cove, and 20 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zaunbrecher, and one sister, Jane Leleux.

He studied for the priesthood at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans and the North American College in Rome.

Zaunbrecher was ordained in 1957, and had pastoral assignments in Abbeville, Eunice, Kaplan, Iota, Lyons Point, Lafayette, Milton and Richard.

He served as pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church in Lafayette and St. Michael's in Crowley.

He held numerous diocesan administrative positions during his priesthood, including diocesan liturgical director, director of religious education, a member of the clergy personnel advisory board and the diocesan tribunal, diocesan consultor, vicar of the West Acadiana Deanery, vicar of the Lafayette City Deanery and vicar of the West Lafayette Deanery.

From 1985-95, he was assigned to the Church of the Little Flower in Mobile, Ala., returning to the Diocese of Lafayette in 1995 for health reasons.
