  Child Molester Dies in Prison

Wisconsin State Journal
December 5, 1996

A Roman Catholic priest accused of molesting at least 10 children over two decades died in prison Wednesday of complications from cancer.

The Rev. William Effinger, 63, died in the infirmary at Dodge Correctional Institution, associate warden Kathleen Nagle said.

He was diagnosed with colon cancer in September.

Effinger, a former Sheboygan priest, was serving a 10-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy. But at least nine other people accused him of molestation.

Effinger pleaded no contest in February 1993 to one count of second-degree sexual assault. A private memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday.
