  Priest Accused of Molestation

Seattle Times
December 15, 1999

Portland - A former altar boy is suing the Archdiocese of Portland for more than $2 million, alleging he was sexually molested by a priest in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The plaintiff, now a 41-year-old hairdresser, said the Rev. Maurice Grammond molested him in Our Lady of Victory Church in Seaside, in the priests' residence and on church trips and youth activities. The lawsuit filed yesterday in Multnomah County Circuit Court seeks $2 million dollars in non-economic - often referred to as pain and suffering - damages and $50,000 in economic damages. Attorney David Slader said he also will seek court approval to ask for an additional $1 million in punitive damages. The lawsuit identifies the plaintiff only as "JWE."

Oregon law allows filing of child sexual-abuse civil claims many years after the child has become an adult. No criminal charges were brought because a statute of limitations expired. A representative for the archdiocese did not immediately return phone calls.
