Priest Removed from His Parish Sends Letter Resigning from City Housing Authority Board

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
March 21, 2002

The Rev. Michael Campbell, who was removed as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, offered his letter of resignation Wednesday from the St. Louis Housing Authority board, said a spokesman for Mayor Francis Slay.

Campbell, whom Slay appointed to the board in June, is one of the priests recently removed from parishes by the Archdiocese of St. Louis as a result of an archdiocesan review of allegations of past sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, the archdiocese this week announced a replacement for Campbell.

Monsignor James T. Telthorst, pastor of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis since 1991, has been appointed pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows, effective April 4.

Taking Telthorst's place at the Cathedral Basilica is the Rev. Monsignor Vernon E. Gardin, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Clayton. The Rev. John B. Shamleffer, a part-time associate pastor of Ste. Genevieve du Bois Church in Kirkwood, is the new pastor of St. Joseph.
