Woman Files Suit against Marist Catholic Associated Press State & Local Wire [Portland Ore] May 11, 2002 A Southern Oregon woman has filed a lawsuit against Marist Catholic High School and the Archdiocese of Portland, claiming she was sexually abused by a monk over a four-year period. The lawsuit, filed Friday in Multnomah County Court, alleges that "J.A." was abused by her math tutor, Lawrence M. Halsey, starting when she was 14. The suit asks for more than $3 million in damages for emotional suffering and medical bills. According to the lawsuit, when Halsey was promoted to school principal the following year, the victim was pulled out of class and sent to his office, where he would have sex with her. The alleged abuse occurred between 1968 and 1972. The Marist Brothers, a nonprofit corporation based in New York, ran Marist Catholic High School under an agreement with the Archdiocese of Portland, according to the lawsuit. The victim's lawyer, David Slader, said Halsey now lives in the Eugene area. |
