Judge Denies Former Priest's Request to Serve Sentence at Home

State and Regional
June 5, 2004

A Superior Court judge refused a former priest's request Friday to serve his six-month sentence for molestation at home instead of in county jail.

Gerardo Tanilong, 72, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of lewd acts with a child, and was removed from ministry by the Diocese of Orange County.

Judge Richard Stanford denied Tanilong's request to serve his sentence at home, but rescheduled his surrender date to July 9.

Tanilong had been a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe parishes in Santa Ana when he molested a 15-year-old girl in the back seat of a car while her parents were in the front seat.

His sentence also includes three years probation, an order to stay away from the girl and to register as a sex offender.
