Status of Deacon James Martone & Rev. Ronald Wamsher

By Mark E. Dupont
Diocese of Springfield
May 11, 2005

Springfield The Diocese of Springfield wishes to clarify the status of two individuals who have been placed under the provisions of the Dallas norms. In both cases the Diocese did previously publicly announce the removal of these individuals pending the outcome of its investigations.

After an investigation and review of the pertinent facts, the diocesan Review Board found the allegations to be credible and Bishop Timothy A. McDonnell placed the Rev. Ronald Wamsher under the conditions of the Dallas Norms.

In addition, the same can be stated regarding allegations made in the spring of 2004 against Deacon James Martone. Bishop McDonnell has also placed him under the Dallas Norms.

Although in both cases the Diocese did make an initial public statement, since both began under previous internal procedures they were not reported under the new standard used by the Diocese. The new procedure calls for public disclosure after an investigation by the Diocese's private investigator has been completed and the Bishop has accepted a credible finding by the Review Board. Because of changes in recent years, the period of time for such investigations has been greatly reduced.
