49 Priests in Buffalo Diocese Receive Honors from Pope

Buffalo News
January 6, 1989

Pope John Paul II has conferred papal honors on 49 priests in the Diocese of Buffalo, Bishop Edward D. Head announced Friday.

The bishop said the pope has designated eight priests as chaplain to his holiness, named 29 others to the higher rank of honorary prelate and elevated 12 from chaplain to his holiness to honorary prelate. Both honors carry the title Reverend Monsignor.

The honors are bestowed periodically on priests who have had a significant, outstanding and effective impact on the spiritual and communal life of the church in the diocese, Bishop Head said.

"There are many other outstanding priests in the diocese who are not on the present list because the list is limited in number," he said. In naming the monsignors, Pope John Paul was "expressing his gratitude and recognition to all of the priests and parishioners" of the diocese, the bishop added.
