The diocese released the list of 34 names on Tuesday but did not immediately provide information regarding where the priests had been assigned. After numerous media requests, Bishop George V. Murry said the diocese would release a list by the end of the week. On Tuesday, church officials could only confirm one name, Robert Hill, as having spent time in the county. The diocese released the full list of assignments late Thursday and a dozen of the clergy members named had an assignment passing through Ashtabula County at some point in their careers. Hill is the most well known, having spent time in prison after being convicted of paying a minor for sex. He spent time at Assumption of Mary in Geneva as well as St. Joseph in Jefferson. Thomas Crum, who spent most of his career in the Youngstown area, was defrocked in 2009 after admitting to 30-year-old allegations that took place at least a decade prior to Crum’s service in St. Mary in Orwell, which dated from 1988 to 1991. Robert Reidy, who in 2002 admitted to abusing two Austintown boys in the 1960s when he was at St. Nicholas in Struthers, had a previous assignment at St. Mary in Conneaut. The diocese did not release details on allegations not already public. Those priests included: • James Fondriest, who served at St. Joseph in Ashtabula • Paul Gubser, who had an assignment at St. Frances Cabrini in Conneaut • Thomas Kelly, who spent time at Mother of Sorrows in Ashtabula • Donald J. Oser, who served at Assumption of Mary in Geneva • John Schmidt, who was at both Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Mother of Sorrows in Ashtabula • William Smaltz, who was located for a time at St. Mary Parish in Conneaut • Francis Zapitelli, whose time included a stop at Assumption of Mary in Geneva • Joseph Bennett, who spent time at three parishes in the county over his career, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Ashtabula, St. Andrew Parish in Kingsville and Assumption Parish in Geneva • James Hennessey, who had an assignment at Mother of Sorrows Parish in Ashtabula. Of the priests listed, only Crum, Reidy and Smaltz are still alive. Allegations against Bennett and Hennessey were made after they died, according to the diocese. Murry said this week the diocese released the list so victims would know the church was listening to them and responding. The hope is by releasing the names of accused priests, more victims will feel comfortable coming forward. Anyone who wishes to report abuse can contact retired Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin-Casey, the victim assistance coordinator for the Diocese of Youngstown, at 330-718-1388. The diocese has received 76 victim allegations total, with 47 of those regarding Brother Stephen Baker, who killed himself in 2013 after being accused of molesting 88 students between 1986 and 2001. The diocese has paid out $500,000 in settlements, the latest in the Brother Baker case in 2016, since 1943. Murry said the diocese turns over any information it receives to civil authorities, but thus far there are no cases with pending charges.
