A Mass of Christian Burial for Rev. Paul L. Gubser, 66, of Hubbard, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Church, Niles, where he will lie in state from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Rev. Gubser died Feb. 25, 2006, at his family's residence in Hubbard.

Born Aug. 26, 1939, in Youngstown, he was a lifelong resident of Hubbard.

Rev. Gubser attended St. Patrick School in Hubbard and graduated from Ursuline High School. He attended Notre Dame University, Mt. Mary College, Xavier University in Cincinnati, and Mt. St. Mary of the West Seminary, earning a Bachelors of Art degree and a Master's in Education and a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained May 17, 1967 by the Most Reverend James W. Malone. Following ordination he ministered as an associate pastor at St. Patrick Parish, Youngstown; Christ Our King Parish, Warren; Immaculate Conception Parish, Ravenna; St. Frances Cabrini Parish, Conneaut; St. Nicholas Parish, Struthers; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, McDonald; St. Peter Parish, Canton; and Sacred Heart Parish, Youngstown. In 1984 he was named pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Summitville, and in 1998 he accepted additional responsibilities as pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Salineville, and St. Phillip Neri Perish, Hanoverton. In 1998 he was named to St. Peter of the Fields Parish, Rootstown, as their sacramental minister. He retired on July 1, 2002. Following his retirement he ministered at St. Stephen Parish, Niles, where his brother, Rev. John Gubser served as pastor until his death. Father Gubser also served as scout chaplain for Portage County and chaplain for Cafaro Hospital.

Survivors include his sisters, Rosemary Gubser of Hubbard, and Sally Schrecengost of Herndon, Va.; brother, William (Suzanne) Gubser of Mentor; nephew, William D. (Jacqueline) Gubser, Jr., of Columbus; nieces, Valerie Ann Gubser, and Vanessa Marie Gubser, both of Lyndhurst; and great-nephews, Daniel Edward Gubser and Michael Irvin Gubser.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin L. and Marie (Foley) Gubser; and brother, Rev. John Gubser on April 26, 2005.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 126 West Park Ave., Niles. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
