The Rev. Crispin Butz, OFM (87) died on November 7, 2011 at Casa Gudalupe Friary in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born Charles Anthony Butz on November 27, 1923 in Lafayette, IN the son of John F and Mary (Mae) Klippel Butz. He attended St. Francis Seminary, Mt. Healthy, OH and entered religious life on August 15, 1941 at St. Anthony National Shrine, Cincinnati, OH. He was ordained a priest in the Franciscan Order on June 8, 1950 at Oldenburg, IN. He spent the early years of his priesthood in parishes in Louisville, KY and Batesville, IN. He was named a Kentucky Colonel in 1951. In January 1954 he was sent to Gallup, NM as associate pastor, and later Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish. He later served as pastor and guardian in various parishes in the Southwest including Cuba, Grants, Albuquerque and Bloomfield, NM. He served as Rector of St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe, NM from 1984-1994 and as Secretary of the OFM Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe from 1994-1997. He also served as relief chaplain at Santa Fe National Cemetery, and Chaplain for the Sisters of Mt. Carmel and the Christian Brothers. In 2000 he celebrated fifty years a priest with a special Mass at St. Boniface Church in Lafayette, IN. He was named a "Sagamore of Wabash" by Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. Surviving siblings are Ann Dykheuzen (Ft. Wayne, IN), Alberta Rose Warwick and Fred Butz of Lafayette, IN. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert L., Walter E. and Fr. Berno (John) Butz, OFM. Also surviving are twenty nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 10th, with burial in the OFM plot of Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
