Biography:
Reverend John William Lennon passed away on December 16, 2012. He was 84 years old. Born on January 20, 1928 in New Rochelle, NY to Daniel and Ethel O’Shaughnessy Lennon. Dear brother of the late Daniel, Charles and Margaret. Rev. Lennon attended St. Philip Neri Grammar School from 1934 – 1942 and Cardinal Hayes High School from 1942 – 1945. After graduating High School he attended Maryknoll Jr. Seminary in Brookville, Massachusetts from 1945 – 1946 and Maryknoll Jr. College in Clark Summit, Pennsylvania from 1946 – 1947, Maryknoll Jr. College in Lakewood, New Jersey from 1947 – 1948 and Maryknoll Major Seminary in Maryknoll, NY from 1948 – 1950. He then entered Maryknoll Novitate in Bedford, Massachusetts from 1950 – 1951 and finally Maryknoll Seminary from 1951 – 1955 when he was ordained on June 11, 1955. After being ordained Fr. Lennon attended Fordham University , Language School for Tagolog, and Santo Tomas University in the Philippines, Massachusetts General Hospital studying Clinical Pastoral Education and Irish Institute of Pastoral Liturgy, St. Patrick’s College in Carlow, Ireland. Fr. Lennon was assigned to the Philippines from 1956 – 1967, where he was pastor of several congregations,,director of Maryknoll Francis High School and Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Mary’s High School, President of Assumption College, Special Contract Chaplain, US Armed Forces,and superintendent of schools in Tagum Diocese, then from 1967 – 1968 taught Clinical Pastoral Education Basic I and II at Massachusetts General Hospital From 1969 – 1970, he was associate pastor at St. Anthony’s Parish in Bronx, NY, taught at Cardinal Hayes High School from 1970 – 1982, was pastor of St. Gregory the Great from 1982 – 1989 and lastly was pastor at St. John the Baptist from 1989 – 2003. Final Interment was held on December 29, 2012 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Yonkers, NY.
