Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests ( 314 862 7688 home, 314 503 0003 cell, SNAPdorris@gmail.com )
We are grateful to New Hampshire’s highest court for recognizing that kids’ actual safety trumps adults’ professed beliefs. We hope this ruling will deter other ministers from trying to exploit legal loopholes and evade responsibility for child sex crimes and cover ups.
Not every sentence uttered between clergy is protected or privileged, especially when it relates to endangering or protecting children.
We still hope that Rev. Phelps’ church demotes or disciplines him. It’s dreadfully wrong for anyone, especially a minister, to mistreat an abuse victim like he mistreated this girl.
