THE Anglican Diocese of Grafton has apologised to children who suffered abuse at the North Coast Children’s Home in Lismore.
In an advertisement in The Northern Star today the diocese has apologised to victims of sexual abuse and to those who experienced hard punishment or did not receive “appropriate nurturing and care” while living at the North Coast Children’s Home.
A victim of physical and sexual abuse at the North Coast Children’s Home between 1948 and 1963, Richard “Tommy” Campion, said he had been trying to get a “truthful apology” for the past eight years.
He said the apology is a “huge step forward” and had “lifted a huge burden” off his shoulders.
“I think this apology is an important step in admitting that the church had responsibility and saying they will provide future care for children (who were abused),” Mr Campion said.
