SACRAMENTO, Calif.—A bill that would give some victims of childhood sexual abuse more time to file civil lawsuits is heading to the Assembly floor after it previously failed to clear a key committee.
The legislation from Democratic Sen. Jim Beall of San Jose would lift the statute of limitations for one year for a group of alleged victims who were 26 and older and missed a similar window to file lawsuits in 2003.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee passed the bill Wednesday, 12-4.
The Catholic Church is a main opponent of SB131. Representatives of the church and other institutions say it unfairly applies only to private or nonprofit groups.
