Deacon Marvin A. Carney, Jr.

Status: Arrested

Diocese: Archdiocese of Louisville KY

Nickname “Skip.” Assigned to St. Rita Parish as a transitional deacon. Arrested 5/16/1981 and charged with sexual abuse, sodomy, distribution of obscene material to a minor and unlawful transaction with a minor, the same week he was to be ordained to the priesthood. Police had questioned a teenage boy in a car outside an adult bookstore who said he was waiting for Carney. Carney was arrested after he came out of the bookstore and handed the boy a bag with pornographic books. Charges were dropped; Fr. Joseph Herp, who was later the subject of substantiated allegations of abuse, may have intervened. The boy’s parents got an attorney who would not allow officials’ further contact with the boy. Carney was ordained in 1986 for the Diocese of Metuchen. No longer in active priesthood after 1990. Living in NJ at least through 2021.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
