Ordained: 1980
Status: Accused

Diocese: Archdiocese of Baltimore MD

Faculties removed in 6/1986 after admitting to sexually abusing a boy, age 13 or 14, around 1975-1976. Mardaga was a seminary student at the time and working at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Baltimore City. The abuse went on for two years and included rape and other forms of violence. Archdiocese and State’s Attorney’s Office agreed to no prosecution if Mardaga underwent a psychological evaluation and any recommended treatment. Sent to three different institutions over several years for evaluation; refused inpatient treatment. The Archdiocese tried to get Mardaga to comply so that his faculties could be restored. Instead, he requested laicization in 1990, which was granted in 1992. His name appeared on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s 9/2002 list of priests credibly accused of abuse. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General’s Report.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
