Fr. Jeremiah Nunan
From Ireland, where he was ordained in 1963. Accused in 2006 of sexually abusing a boy, ages 9-12, in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Suspended. Denied the allegation. Nunan’s accuser said he told the Diocese in 2004 but nothing was done. He filed suit in 11/2006. The Diocese cleared Nunan in 1/2007 and returned him to his previous assignment in Cairo, NY. The alleged victim died in 3/2008; the lawsuit continued. A new suit was filed in 4/2012 by two brothers claiming abuse as minors by Nunan, who was then removed without privileges. Nunan allegedly paid one of the brothers in 2010-2012 to keep quiet. The Diocese announced on 6/30/2018 that Nunan was permanently barred from ministry due to a credible allegation that he sexually abused a minor in the early 1990s. He was added to the Diocese’s list of accused. One of the two brothers, whose claim in 2012 was barred by the statute of limitations, filed suit in 12/2019 under the NY Child Victims Act, claiming abuse by Nunan 1989-1995, at ages 9-15. His sibling was allegedly abused from ages 7-21.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
