SOUTH BEND, Ind. — ABC57 Investigative Reporter Brian Conybeare uncovers multiple allegations of clergy sex abuse at the University of Notre Dame.
Four alumni naming four different priests over the course of three decades.
In September, the university launched an external investigation into allegations against one priest, Father Thomas King CSC, a longtime rector at Zahm Hall on campus. He is accused of sexually abusing students in the past.
But the allegations go much deeper than just Father King. Hear from four sexual abuse survivors, sharing their harrowing stories in hopes others feel safe doing the same.
They also say they want Notre Dame to expand its investigation into all priests accused of sexual abuse over the decades, with full transparency and accountability.
Notre Dame statement:
“Notre Dame is deeply saddened and concerned for anyone who suffered abuse while a member of our community. A thorough investigation is underway and being led by Helen Cantwell at the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP with the oversight of University’s Board of Trustees, and we continue to urge anyone who may have relevant information or may have been a victim to contact the investigators via email at NotreDameReview@debevoise.com. We await the key findings of the report, which will be shared with the University community, and which will be the appropriate time to address the investigation further. Notre Dame stands in solidarity with all victims of abuse, and we are committed to doing the work necessary to maintain accountability, promote healing, and restore trust.”
Holy Cross College statement:
“After the University of Notre Dame announced its investigation into Father King, Holy Cross College made the decision to initiate its own investigation as well given that Fr. King was a member of the College’s faculty almost two decades ago. Holy Cross College has retained Barrett McNagny LLP to conduct a comprehensive investigation into any allegations pertaining to Father King’s time at Holy Cross and that is currently ongoing. Their findings will be reported directly to our Board Chair and President, and we will keep our community informed as appropriate. Out of respect for the independent nature of the investigation—and for all individuals who may be affected, we are not in a position to comment on personnel decisions. Our focus is ensuring a full and transparent review of any matters related to Father King’s time at Holy Cross. We remain committed to providing a safe environment for every member of our community. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact us confidentially at 574-472-8610 or attention@hcc-nd.edu or reach out to civil authorities. Anyone who has experienced misconduct by a current or former member of the Holy Cross College community is encouraged to contact civil authorities. We continue to pray for all victims of misconduct that they may find healing, peace, and justice.”
