The accused and the two victims were known to one another, police say

Provincial police in Elgin County have charged a Southwold man who formerly worked at a St. Thomas elementary school following an investigation into an alleged sexual luring incident.

Elgin County OPP announced the charges Wednesday afternoon, accusing a 59-year-old man of sexual misconduct and charging him with two counts each of communicating with anyone for the purpose of obtaining sexual services, and communicating with someone under 18 years old for the same reason.

The London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB) has confirmed the man did, in the past, work at one of its elementary schools.

In a letter to parents it shared with CBC News, the school board said the accused “was in our school through a third party (not as a LDCSB employee).”

Police first began investigating after being called to a Southwold Township address following the report of an incident. They said there are two victims, both of whom were known to the accused.

There are concerns that other victims exist that they don’t yet know about, police said.

OPP asked potential victims to reach out to officers and local support resources for help.

The accused was held for bail, police said, but they have not yet said when the next court date for the accused is scheduled.

While police investigate, the LDCSB asked parents to avoid speculation “especially on social media.”

It asks anyone with information to contact the OPP, and said “safety is of paramount importance to all of us here at our school and the London District Catholic School Board.”
