Diocese: Diocese of Rockville Centre NY

Accused in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act as of 2020 of sexually abusing a minor 1965-1967 at LaSalle Military Academy in Oakdale NY. Named in the 3/4/2026 RI Attorney General’s Report. Edes entered the order in 1957. He taught at LaSalle Military Academy in NY, then was assigned 1978-1994 to St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket RI. In 1994 the Providence Diocese received an allegation that Edes sexually abused a boy 1986-1990. The boy was a St. Raphael student on scholarship. He said that Edes told him he would lose his scholarship if he told anyone about the abuse, which ended when the boy graduated. Edes was sent to treatment in NM. He left the order in 1995. The alleged victim filed a civil lawsuit in 2000, which settled. In 2018 another former St. Raphael’s student reported to the Diocese that Edes sexually assaulted him when he was a senior in 1986, and that he told a teacher at the school a few years later. The Order told the Diocese in 2018 that there were two other credible allegations against Edes in their files (one already known to the Diocese). In 2025 Edes admitted to RI State Police his behavior with the scholarship student, saying it was “consensual,” that he may have had “consensual” sex with another St. Raphael’s senior, and that he had oral sexual intercourse with a male student at “La Salle” in Long Island NY.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
