A Catholic priest who worked at an Ontario church for a decade has been removed after he was charged with the sexual assault of a volunteer.
In a statement to INsauga.com, the Diocese of Hamilton says Father Rajan D’Sa “was immediately removed” removed from his duties at St. Dominic Parish in Oakville after the charge was made public earlier this week.
He has been “prohibited from all priestly ministry, pending the results of further police investigations into the allegation,” the diocese says.
The Halton Regional Police Service said on Tuesday that an investigation started in February after receiving a report about the alleged sexual assault of an adult female victim.
Police say the assault happened while the victim was volunteering at the Oakville church.
D’sa has been a member of the clergy since 2010, and was working at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Oakville since 2016. He was listed as a member of the clergy on the church’s website on Tuesday, but has since been removed.
The diocese said it was unable to comment on the allegation, but said it would “pray for the alleged victim and her family.”
The accused was released on an undertaking with a future court date scheduled in Milton, police say.
Investigators are concerned there may be additional victims and are requesting anyone with information to contact the Halton police Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit at 905-825-4777 ext. 8970.
