Henry Wise Wood volunteer coach used position to groom, abuse minor, police say

Calgary police say a high school coach has been charged after allegedly sexually abusing a minor.

Drew Alan Robertson, 50, allegedly used his position of trust as a volunteer coach at Henry Wise Wood High School to groom a then-15-year-old and sexually abuse her over the course of nearly two years, police said in a release.

Police announced Tuesday that Robertson has been charged with one count each of sexual assault, sexual exploitation and making sexually explicit material available to children.

Robertson will next appear in court on Wednesday.

David Roper, Robertson’s lawyer, declined a request for comment.

Coach shared ‘inappropriate’ video with parent-student group chat: police

Staff Sgt. Chris Tudor with the Calgary Police Service child abuse unit told reporters the investigation began after a video that was “inappropriate and sexual in nature,” believed to depict Robertson, “had been shared with a parent-student group chat of the high school.”

Tudor said police aren’t aware of any other potential victims, but encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

He said detectives have conducted numerous interviews and are continuing to investigate.

Tudor said Robertson isn’t believed to have a criminal background.

Coach ‘will have no further association’ with school teams: CBE

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) said in a statement that it is “aware of the charges” laid against Robertson.

“In keeping with CBE policy, the community volunteer coach will have no further association with any CBE school teams,” the school board said. “The school will continue to fully cooperate with the police investigation.”

In an email sent to families before the investigation was launched, CBE said it had “been made aware of a reported inappropriate video potentially involving a volunteer coach that recently circulated on a Snapchat group chat that included a number of students from our school.”

The situation was reported to police on May 12, and an investigation was launched the following day.

Police say the youth is receiving support from the Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, which supports child abuse intervention and prevention in Calgary.

CBE said it is offering support to students connected to Robertson, and is encouraging families to seek additional mental health and well-being community supports if necessary.
