The Diocese of Ogdensburg has reached a settlement that will pay a total of $45 million to the victims of child sexual abuse in the church.
The settlement was announced May 19 and will seek to resolve more than 100 claims of sexual abuse.
“The Diocese of Ogdensburg is committed to ensuring the safety of all persons entrusted to our care,” said Bishop Terry R. LaValley. “The great harm that has been caused by this sinful behavior must never be allowed to happen again. It is my sincere hope that this process has brought the survivors some comfort and peace.”
The Diocese filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy case in July 2023, before the United States Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of New York to resolve 125 claims of child sexual abuse filed against the Diocese under the Child’s Victim Act. The Committee was appointed by the U.S. Trustee to represent all survivors who filed claims against the Diocese and other members of the Catholic Family.
“This settlement in principle between the Diocese and the Committee is an important first step in forming a Chapter 11 plan that will lead to the Diocese emerging from Chapter 11,” a representative from the Diocese said in a press release
“These survivors who came forward have not only gained justice in the only way it can be had, they have also made sure that children of today and tomorrow live in a safer world. Being able to work with these survivors through this process has been and will continue to be something we are deeply committed to and also incredibly thankful for,” said Cynthia LaFave, an attorney representing the victims.
“It is the fortitude of these survivors that has brought this historic day about. Finally, the Diocese of Ogdensburg is accepting some responsibility for the horrors of the past.”
In addition to the financial settlement, the Survivor Committee and the Diocese will continue negotiations regarding significant non-monetary provisions, including enhancements to child protection policies and the public disclosure of information related to clergy and other personnel accused of sexual abuse.
