France is confronting one of its most serious child-protection scandals in recent years after authorities confirmed investigations into nearly 100 allegations of abuse across preschools, primary schools and daycare centres.

France is facing growing scrutiny over child safety within its public education system after prosecutors confirmed investigations into dozens of schools and childcare facilities linked to allegations of abuse involving young children. According to French authorities, investigations are currently under way in 84 preschools, around 20 primary schools and approximately 10 daycare centres in Paris alone. The cases involve allegations ranging from physical mistreatment and neglect to sexual assault and rape, with some complaints involving children as young as three years old.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said investigators are examining nearly one hundred reports connected to alleged misconduct by school monitors, adults employed by local authorities to supervise children during lunch breaks, naps and after-school activities. Several cases have already progressed through the judicial system, with five individuals summoned to court as investigations continue. The scale of the allegations has shocked France and triggered questions about recruitment standards, supervision procedures and institutional oversight within the country’s education sector.

Allegations Span Physical And Sexual Abuse

Prosecutors say the alleged incidents occurred during periods when children were under the supervision of monitors rather than classroom teachers. Complaints cited in French media include accusations of children being screamed at, pushed, having their hair pulled, being denied food and subjected to excessive punishment. More serious allegations involve claims of sexual assault and rape at schools attended by very young children.

One of the cases attracting significant attention involves a 47-year-old school monitor accused of sexually assaulting three girls and sexually harassing nine others when they were around 10 years old. Prosecutors have reportedly requested an 18-month suspended sentence and a permanent ban on working with children.

Another investigation concerns allegations that a three-year-old girl was raped by a school monitor at a school in western Paris. According to reports, the same individual is also accused of raping a three-year-old boy after being transferred to another school despite earlier complaints regarding violent behaviour towards children.

Parents Launch #MeTooEcoles Campaign

As investigations expand, affected families have begun organising collectively under a movement known as #MeTooEcoles. The campaign argues that complaints from parents were repeatedly ignored or inadequately addressed by local authorities, allowing alleged abuse to continue. Members of the group say many families are still awaiting responses regarding complaints submitted months earlier.

Co-founder Barka Zerouali told French media she fears the current investigations represent only a fraction of the total number of cases that may eventually emerge. “We’re not just angry — we’re outraged,” she said, arguing that authorities failed to react appropriately when concerns were first raised.

The growing pressure has prompted political leaders to respond. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire, who has publicly spoken about experiencing sexual abuse during an after-school swimming programme as a child, announced dozens of staff suspensions and pledged reforms to strengthen child protection measures.

Among the proposed changes are stricter background checks for school monitors, improved recruitment standards and expanded training focused on recognising and reporting suspected abuse. Critics, however, argue that the reforms must go further and address what they describe as systemic failures that allowed complaints to be overlooked.
