An Iowa teacher was arraigned on charges related to alleged child sex crimes.
Andrew Roos, a teacher at Hempstead High School in Dubuque, allegedly tried to use, persuade or entice minors to engage in sexually explicit conduct, according to a federal indictment. Then, he would allegedly produce visual depictions that he distributed and possessed as child pornography.
According to documents, this happened at the school over “several” years.
Police said they took two pens with hidden cameras and a USB drive from Roos’ classroom.
Police also said he had AI-generated images of high school students from Dubuque.
The investigation started after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted law enforcement to potential child sexual abuse materials. Multiple victims were identified.
“Actions like those alleged have no place in our schools or community and, as a District, we share in this deep concern. It is clear from the charges that this was a complex, multifaceted investigation that extends far beyond our District and community,” read a statement from the Dubuque Community School District, in part.
Roos remains on paid leave at this time. If convicted, he faces up to 120 years in prison.
