A judge has decided on bond for the four people charged after authorities say a convicted sex offender had contact with children at a Pawleys Island-area church and school.
Convicted sex offender Warren Perry appeared first Tuesday afternoon, and the judge denied his bond.
No attorney spoke on Perry’s behalf, and he told the judge he did not understand one of his charges.
The judge set bond for former senior pastor of Pawleys Island Community Church Don Williams and former Pawleys Island Christian Academy Director Niki Howard at $75,000, and for Ginny Williams, Don Williams’ wife, at $50,000. Bond was set at $25,000 per charge for each defendant.
Howard has posted bond and been released.
Don Williams and Howard face obstruction of justice, unlawful placing of a child at risk, and conspiracy charges. Ginny Williams and Perry face obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges. Don and Ginny Williams were arrested Monday in Summerville and extradited to Georgetown County. Perry and Howard were also arrested Monday.
Howard turned herself in voluntarily after a news conference where Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver announced the charges. She gave investigators a statement, her computer, and her phone, and signed a consent-to-search form.
Howard’s attorney argued that Don Williams misled her, saying he was not just her boss but also her pastor who exercised significant power. The attorney said Howard feels she was led astray, claiming Williams told her Perry’s arrangement with probation had been approved and was clear.
Don and Ginny Williams’ attorney said the two were in Summerville because their home address was posted online and they feared for their safety. Both agreed to surrender their passports.
All four have mandatory court dates on Sept. 24 and Oct. 22.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office at 843-546-5102.
