[This 35-minute video interview with Paulina Guzik, Polish journalist and author of the book Truth Heals, explores the task of educating bishops, diocesan communications directors, victim assistance coordinators, and Catholics generally, in the value of speaking with survivors. Guzik speaks about her interview with the Polish survivor known at the time as Victor, and the impact on her and on him of that interview. She also talks about her conversation with Chicago survivor Michael Hoffman and the effect on him of his meeting with Cardinal Francis George, who did not press Hoffman to forgive. Guzik compares the clergy abuse situation in the United States with the resistance that Catholic prelates have shown in other countries, especially in Africa, and also explores the deficient approach to safeguarding in the secular world, particularly in schools. Guzik explains that her book had its beginnings in the 2019 clergy abuse revelations in Poland, in the Polish bishops’ poor response, and in the 2019 meeting at the Vatican which she attended. ]

In this episode of “One Nation Under God,” Susie Pinto sits down with Paulina Guzik, a journalist who wrote “Truth Heals.” Together, they discuss sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, why it’s important for journalists to speak to these victims and the encouraging story of one victim who is now confident to speak out and help others.
