A national support network for survivors of abuse is urging the Catholic Diocese of Stockton to add more names to its list of “credibly accused” clergy.

David Clohessy, former executive director of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, stood outside the Stockton diocese’s offices at 212 N. San Joaquin St. Tuesday afternoon, holding a sign with a list of seven clergymen who spent parts of their careers in the area, and have been publicly accused of abuse in other regions.

“This is the same self-serving pattern we’ve seen for decades,” Clohessy said. “It’s when bishops under pressure claim to be coming clean, when they’re not.”

In 2017, the diocese was required to post the names of 14 clergy members accused of abuse on its website.

However, Clohessy said he was able to find seven more priests accused of…

The Catholic priest charged with misdemeanor sexual battery and child molestation while visiting from Colombia was found not guilty by a jury on Friday afternoon in Sutter County Superior Court.

“When I first got this case, I was concerned about it because it was a Roman Catholic priest charged with molestation,” said defense attorney Markus Dombois. “What I said in the beginning of this case was this was a witch hunt, and this girl had imagined these things.”

Prosecutors argued that the Rev. Julio Cesar Guarin-Sosa used his position of power with the church and a 16-year-old girl’s confidence issues to take advantage of her while they were alone in her bedroom, kissing her multiple times on her face, sticking his tongue in her mouth, holding her tight and “sucking” or “nibbling” on her nose.

A Catholic priest “nibbled” a Yuba City teenager’s nose, put his head against her chest, pulled her down onto a bed and kissed her face repeatedly, the 16-year-old testified on Thursday.

“Then he put his tongue inside my mouth,” the girl said in Sutter County Superior Court. The Appeal-Democrat is not naming the girl because she is a minor and an alleged victim.

During a recorded phone call between the girl and the Rev. Julio Cesar Guarin-Sosa, the Colombian priest apologized for the alleged March 8 incident in the Yuba City girl’s bedroom and asked her to keep it secret, Yuba City police Officer Isabel Kodani testified.

“Because he said it would destroy his life,” Kodani said. “He told her it would never happen again.”

Priest Criminal Arrests and Suicides

UNITED STATES

One of the key lessons we were taught as priests is that bishops are the Episkopos, or, the Overseer of their Dioceses. As the Episkopos, a bishop oversees all Roman Catholic Priests to whom he has granted faculties.

A bishop’s ability to oversee or supervise the clergy is reaching a new low. The criminal conduct by priests in 2013 has not abated. Rather, priest arrests are increasing. See the most recent arrests of Fathers Koppala, Guarin-Sosa, Medina-Cruz and Wehmeyer.

Worse yet, even though the Dallas 2002 Charter prohibited Episcokopos from having criminally convicted priests in ministry, Archbishops have chosen to continue placing such priests like Father Michael Fugee in control over children.

Two recent priest suicides are another sign the Bishops are not supervising the Priests. Father David Anderson in Los Angeles and Father Jamie Medina-Cruz chose to end their lives. I do not…

We are sad and again alarmed to learn of the news of the arrest of a visiting priest from Colombia working in the Diocese of Stockton for child sexual abuse. Time will tell what was known of Rev. Guarin-Sosa’s history and safety in working with children. What is known to us already is that numerous priests have been transferred globally with the aid of the catholic hierarchy after being credibly accused of abusing children. Fr. Nicolas Aguilar is just one example.

Aguilar abused kids in Mexico and then was shipped to Los Angeles, where he abused at least 26 other kids, before being sent back to Mexico. There, he disappeared and continues to evade law enforcement and justice.

Once again, innocent children pay the price because Bishop Stephen Blaire refused to do a simple background check on one of his priests. What is even more tragic about this case is that the arrested priest abused in a parish that–not so long ago–was savaged by the crimes of Oliver O’Grady.

Unfortunately, the case of visiting priest Rev. Julio Guarin-Sosa is not unique. California’s bishops have a habit of accepting foreign priests with little to no investigation of their backgrounds. In Los Angeles, Cardinal Roger Mahony accepted two foreign priests–Fernando Lopez Lopez and Nicolas Aguilar-Rivera–with nothing more than a letter of recommendation from their bishops. Had Mahony done any investigation, he would have learned that Lopez Lopez had been convicted…
