Br. Andre Bennett

Given name John. Entered the Benedictine order in 1952 and made final vows in 1957. Registered nurse. Ran the infirmary at St. John’s Abbey 1958-1991. At least two St. John’s Prep students accused Bennett of sexually abusing them. Abbey officials said that he had problems with alcohol and was later treated for abuse of prescription drugs. He lived at the Abbey under restrictions until his death 1/15/2007. The victims may have settled as part of a massive settlement announced in 10/2002 with claims regarding about 11 St. John’s Abbey priests and monks. There was another settlement in 3/2011. Bennett’s name was included on a list of monks likely to have offended against minors released by the Abbey 12/9/2013.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
