Fr. Emil J. Beyer

Ordained: 1940
Status: Sued

Died: 08/10/2003
Diocese: Diocese of Marquette MI

Per the 10/2022 MI Attorney General’s Report, the Diocese received a report in 1997 that Beyer sexually abused a boy at Holy Family Orphanage from 1944 until the boy left at age 14 in 1956. Beyer denied the allegations. The accuser’s brother said the priest also abused him. The Diocesan Assessment Teams found the allegations by the first accuser “believable” and recommended Beyer be sent to St. Luke Institute for treatment. Beyer’s faculties to minister were temporarily restricted. In 2001 the diocese stated that their investigation “…led us to confirm Father Beyer’s denial of the allegations.” A lawsuit filed in 2002 was dismissed due to the statute of limitations. Beyer died in 2003.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
