Removed from ministry in 6/2002 after a man told the archdiocese that Champagne abused him as a boy in 1979. The alleged victim told another priest, who in 1986 informed Archbishop Hunthausen that Champagne had “momentarily” molested a boy once in 1979. No action. The Vatican permanently removed Champagne from public ministry in 9/2006, giving him “a life of prayer and penance.” On archdiocese’s list of credibly accused in 1/15/2016. Worked in Kenmore, Seahurst, Seattle, Tacoma, Snohomish and Lakewood. In 1/2020 the archdiocese settled for $1.7M with someone claiming abuse in the 1980s. Another settlement 7/16/2020.
